Our Favorite Hair Transformations of 2018

As 2018 draws to a close, we cannot help but look back on an incredible year at Sofia Loren Salon in Boca Raton. This has been a year of beautiful transformations, daring changes, and clients who trusted us to help them find the hair of their dreams. From dramatic color corrections to subtle refreshes that made someone look five years younger, every appointment told a story. While we loved every transformation we were part of, some stood out as particularly memorable. Here is a look at the types of changes that defined our year.
The Blonde-to-Brunette Brave Souls
One of the most significant trends we saw in 2018 was women making the leap from blonde back to brunette. For years, the push had been toward lighter and lighter hair, with heavy balayage and all-over blondes dominating requests. This year, something shifted. Women walked in with over-processed, heavily highlighted hair and said they were ready for something richer, healthier, and more natural.
Going from blonde to brunette is not as simple as slapping on a dark color. Over-lightened hair is porous and will grab color unevenly, resulting in a muddy, flat result if the process is not handled correctly. Our colorists used a technique called filling, which involves depositing warm, underlying tones into the hair before applying the final color. This ensures the brunette shade has depth, warmth, and richness rather than looking like a flat, dull box dye.
The most rewarding part of these transformations was seeing the immediate improvement in hair health. Brunette hair looks thicker, shinier, and healthier because the darker pigment fills in the damaged cuticle and reflects light more evenly. Clients who had been battling dry, brittle blonde hair suddenly had glossy, vibrant brunette locks that moved and bounced with new life. Several of our clients said they wished they had made the switch sooner.
Curtain Bangs Changed Faces
If there was one cut that defined 2018 at our salon, it was curtain bangs. We lost count of how many clients came in with a photo of perfectly parted, face-framing fringe and asked us to make it happen. And the transformation was always striking. Curtain bangs have a remarkable ability to change the entire feel of a hairstyle without altering the length or overall shape.
Some of our most dramatic before-and-after moments came from adding curtain bangs to long, one-length hair that had become predictable and uninspiring. Suddenly, the same hair had personality, movement, and a frame around the face that drew attention to the eyes and cheekbones. We saw jaws drop in the mirror more than once.
The clients who were most nervous about getting bangs turned out to be the most thrilled with the results. Bangs feel like a big commitment, and many women avoid them because they have had a bad experience in the past. But curtain bangs are far more forgiving than a blunt, straight-across fringe. They grow out gracefully, they work with your natural part, and they look good even when they are not freshly styled.
Color Corrections That Made Us Proud
Some of the most challenging and ultimately satisfying work our team did in 2018 involved color corrections. A color correction is necessary when previous color work has gone wrong, whether from a DIY attempt, an inexperienced colorist, or simply years of accumulated color that has created banding, unevenness, or unwanted tones.
We worked with clients who came in with orange-banded highlights, patchy bleach jobs, and colors that bore no resemblance to what they had asked for. These situations require patience, expertise, and multiple sessions to resolve properly. Rushing a color correction almost always makes things worse, so we set realistic expectations and created a plan for each client.
The transformations were remarkable. Watching someone go from feeling embarrassed about their hair to absolutely loving it over the course of two or three carefully planned appointments was deeply rewarding. One client told us she had been wearing her hair in a bun for three months because she was too embarrassed to wear it down. After her correction was complete, she wore it down every day.
The Shag Revival
The modern shag made a big comeback in 2018, and our stylists embraced it wholeheartedly. We had clients who had been wearing the same layered cut for years come in and ask for something different, something with more personality and edge. The modern shag delivered exactly that.
What made these transformations special was how much personality the shag added to each client’s look. A conservative, corporate professional suddenly looked effortlessly cool. A busy mom who never had time to style her hair suddenly had a cut that looked intentionally tousled and fashion-forward with zero effort. The shag has this magical quality of making everyone who wears it look like they have an interesting story to tell.
The most popular version at our salon was a medium-length shag with curtain bangs and textured, piece-y layers. It worked on straight hair, wavy hair, and curly hair alike, with each texture giving it a completely different character. Our curly-haired clients especially loved the shag because it gave their curls shape and definition that their previous, blunt cuts never achieved.
Extensions That Changed Lives
Hand-tied extensions were another highlight of our 2018 transformations. We worked with women who had fine, thin hair and always felt self-conscious about it. We worked with women who had experienced hair loss due to medical treatments or hormonal changes. We worked with brides who wanted their dream wedding-day hair. In every case, the transformation was about more than just adding length or volume. It was about confidence.
One transformation that stands out involved a client who had been losing hair due to a thyroid condition. Her ponytail had shrunk to half its former size, and she felt like she had tried everything. Hand-tied extensions gave her back the fullness she had lost, and the emotional impact was profound. She cried in the chair, not from sadness but from relief and joy at seeing herself look like herself again.
Lessons From a Year of Transformations
Looking back at 2018, a few themes emerge. First, the trend toward lower maintenance was real and meaningful. Clients wanted beautiful hair that did not require daily effort to maintain. Lived-in color, easy-to-style cuts, and techniques that grew out gracefully were consistently in demand. Second, communication was everything. Our best transformations happened when clients felt comfortable being honest about what they wanted and our stylists were equally honest about what was achievable. Third, trust matters. The clients who were most satisfied were the ones who trusted their stylist’s expertise and were open to professional guidance.
We are grateful for every client who sat in our chairs this year and trusted us with their hair. Every transformation, whether it was a subtle trim or a complete reinvention, mattered to us.
