Brazilian blowout is one of the most popular smoothing treatments in South Florida, but clients often have questions about safety and what the process involves. Here is what you should know.
How a Brazilian Blowout Works
A Brazilian blowout applies a liquid keratin protein to the hair, then uses heat from a flat iron to seal the treatment into the cuticle. The result is smoother, shinier, frizz-free hair that lasts 10–12 weeks. Unlike older straightening treatments, a Brazilian blowout does not permanently alter your hair structure. Your natural texture returns gradually as the treatment washes out.
Is It Safe?
Modern Brazilian blowout formulas have evolved significantly from earlier versions. The professional products we use at Sofia Loren Salon are formulated to meet current safety standards. Here is what matters:
Formaldehyde concerns: Early versions of smoothing treatments contained high levels of formaldehyde, which raised health concerns. Current professional-grade formulas either eliminate formaldehyde or use it at levels well below safety thresholds. We use only professional formulas that comply with salon safety standards.
Ventilation: Proper salon ventilation is important during any chemical treatment. Our salon maintains good air circulation during all smoothing services.
Hair health: A Brazilian blowout actually adds protein to the hair, which can strengthen weak or damaged strands. However, it does involve heat processing, so it is important that your stylist assesses your hair condition before proceeding. If your hair is severely damaged, we may recommend a deep conditioning treatment first.
Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Get One
- Frizzy hair in humid climates
- Wavy or curly hair wanting smoother texture
- Anyone wanting faster styling time
- Color-treated hair (safe to combine)
- Pregnant or nursing women (as a precaution)
- Severely damaged or over-processed hair
- People with scalp sensitivities
What to Expect
The treatment takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours. You can wash your hair the same day with most modern formulas. Results are immediate: your hair will feel noticeably smoother and look shinier from your first shampoo. The effect gradually fades over 10–12 weeks, so there is no awkward grow-out period.
At Sofia Loren Salon, Brazilian blowout starts at $200+. We also offer Magic Sleek ($135/hour) and Brazilian Keratin ($200+) as alternative smoothing options.
