Cheers to 2019: Our Year of Beautiful Transformations

Another year has come and gone, and what a year it has been at Sofia Loren Salon in Boca Raton. As we raise a glass to 2019, we want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible transformations, the exciting trends, and the wonderful clients who made this year unforgettable. From bold money pieces to understated mushroom brown, from 90s revivals to cutting-edge bond-building treatments, 2019 was a year that kept us inspired and on our toes.
The Year of Bold Face-Framing Color
If there was one color trend that defined 2019 at our salon, it was the money piece. More than any other technique, the money piece captured the imagination of our clients and became the must-have color service of the year. We created money pieces in every shade imaginable: platinum against dark brunette, honey against warm brown, rose gold against black, and everything in between.
What we loved most about the money piece trend was its accessibility. Unlike a full head of highlights, which represents a significant time and financial commitment, a money piece could transform someone’s look in about an hour at a fraction of the cost. We saw clients who had never colored their hair before come in for a money piece as their first-ever color service, and the impact was always stunning. That one bright frame around the face changed their entire appearance and often became the gateway to more adventurous color down the road.
Face-framing color in general was a major theme of the year. Even clients who did not want a bold money piece were asking for softer, more subtle face-framing highlights that brightened their complexion and added dimension where it was most visible. The emphasis on putting color where it makes the biggest visual impact is a philosophy we expect to carry well into the next decade.
Cool Tones Made a Comeback
For years, warm tones dominated hair color: golden blondes, caramel highlights, honey balayage. In 2019, the pendulum swung toward cooler, more muted tones. Mushroom brown was the poster child for this shift, but we also saw increased demand for ashy blondes, cool-toned brunettes, and silver-inflected highlights.
This shift toward cool tones was particularly interesting in South Florida, where warm, sun-kissed color has always been the default. Our Boca Raton clients embraced cool tones as a way to stand out from the crowd. When everyone else has golden highlights, a cool mushroom brown or icy blonde makes a statement simply by being different. It was refreshing to see our clients choosing shades based on what they found beautiful rather than defaulting to what everyone else was wearing.
The 90s Nostalgia Wave
The 90s revival hit full stride in 2019, influencing everything from hair accessories to cutting techniques. We sold more claw clips, scrunchies, and decorative barrettes this year than in any previous year. Clients came in asking for chunky layers, face-framing pieces reminiscent of the Rachel, and half-up styles secured with vintage-inspired clips.
What made the 90s revival successful was the way our clients adapted it to modern sensibilities. Nobody was trying to look exactly like they did in 1995. Instead, they were taking elements of 90s style, a butterfly clip here, a chunky layer there, and mixing them with contemporary cuts and colors to create something that felt both nostalgic and fresh. This selective approach to trend adoption is something we always encourage. Take what works for you, leave what does not, and never feel pressured to embrace a trend that does not suit your style or face.
Scalp Care Became a Real Conversation
One of the most meaningful shifts we saw in 2019 was the growing awareness of scalp health. Clients started asking about scalp exfoliation, scalp serums, and scalp treatments with a specificity that did not exist even a year ago. The conversation about hair care expanded to include the skin from which hair grows, and we welcomed this evolution enthusiastically.
We introduced new scalp treatment services at the salon and saw enthusiastic uptake from clients who had been dealing with issues like dryness, flakiness, and sensitivity without knowing there were professional solutions available. Many reported that their hair looked and felt better once they started paying attention to their scalp, which makes perfect sense. Healthy soil produces healthy plants, and a healthy scalp produces healthy hair.
Glossy Hair Became the Ultimate Goal
The glass hair trend, that mirror-like, impossibly shiny finish that dominated social media, drove a surge in gloss treatments at our salon. Clients wanted their hair to look luminous, reflective, and magazine-worthy. Professional gloss treatments became one of our most popular add-on services, and many clients who had never tried one before became regulars once they saw the results.
The pursuit of glossy hair also elevated the conversation about hair health in general. You cannot achieve true gloss on severely damaged hair, no matter how many products you use. This motivated many clients to invest in bond-building treatments, reduce their heat styling, upgrade their home care products, and take a more holistic approach to hair health. The trend toward gloss was really a trend toward healthier hair overall, and that is something we will always support.
Bond-Building Changed the Game
Bond-building treatments continued to gain momentum in 2019, and we incorporated them into more services than ever before. Nearly every color and lightening service at our salon now includes a bond-building step, and the improvement in results has been dramatic. Hair comes out of color processes stronger, smoother, and more vibrant than it did just a few years ago before these treatments were available.
We also saw more clients incorporating at-home bond builders into their weekly routines, and the cumulative effect was noticeable. Clients who had been struggling with dry, brittle, breakage-prone hair gradually built up their hair’s strength over the course of months, and the improvement was visible to everyone. Bond-building is no longer a novelty. It has become a standard part of hair care for anyone who colors, heat-styles, or lives in a challenging climate like South Florida.
Our Clients Made It All Possible
Behind every trend, technique, and transformation, there is a person sitting in the chair, trusting us with something deeply personal. Our clients are the heart of everything we do at Sofia Loren Salon. Their willingness to try new things, their trust in our expertise, and their loyalty to our salon are what make our work meaningful and fulfilling.
We are especially grateful for the new clients who found us in 2019, many of whom came on the recommendation of existing clients.
