Top 2023 Haircut Trends

There have been endless haircut trends that have come and gone throughout this year. While some probably won’t stick around, there are a few standout trends. The coming year is all about the two hair-length extremes: You’re either team Rapunzel or Team Joan of Arc. Check out these haircuts that are going to be huge in 2023.

The phrase “new year, new me,” means something different to everyone. If it inspires you to switch up your hair look or even go for a big, dramatic chop, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve tapped hairstylists to predict the biggest 2023 haircut trends. The TL;DR: They’re extra-cool, with some breathing new life to memorable trends of the past and others combining existing looks (like the mixie, which we’ll get into later).

The last year resurfaced a bevy of ‘90s of hair trends thanks to viral TikTok videos and celebrity sightings — and they’re not gong anywhere. The famous layered haircut named “The Rachel” (after Jennifer Aniston’s Friends character) was rebranded as the octopus haircut — and TikTok burst with videos of people getting the chop and styling it. Another ‘90s look that got its 2022 revival was the bob-pixie, aka the bixie. Characterized by its  jaw-skimming length, the bixie looks just as good on Sarah Hyland and Kaia Gerber, who got the look this year, as it did on ’90s “it” girls like Meg Ryan and Cameron Diaz.

To no one’s surprise, different iterations of the bob are going to be a huge trend, but experts also expect a resurgence of long hair. “I think a lot of people grew their hair out during the pandemic,” says Los Angeles-based hairstylist Clayton Hawkins. “A lot of my clients who had bobs or shoulder length hair cut — they’re all trying to grow them out and have super long hair.”

Though, for those who want to keep their short haircuts, hairstylist Ray Christopher predicts “the bobs are getting shorter.” Gone are the days of the lob. You’re either team Rapunzel or Joan of Arc.

Lastly, Sara Granberger, hairstylist and co-owner of Hairrari LA, says to consider hybrid haircuts. “Clients now are more prone to come in with several inspo pics where they show us details in each pictures that they would like for us to put together in one cut,” she says. This includes the mixie (a pixie and mullet hybrid) and the shaggy bowl cut (a shag and bowl haircut’s love child).

Keep reading to discover the eight haircuts experts predict will be everywhere next year and get ready to book your next appointment.

The Shaggy Bowl Cut

This ’70s-inspired look may just be one of 2023’s most nostalgic haircut trends. Frédéric Fekkai, New York-based hairstylist and founder of Fekkai haircare, and Hawkins both say they’ve seen a lot of requests for this look, which is also referred to as the “Farrah Fawcett flip,” in the salon. “As we move into 2023, we’ll be seeing a bit more of a ’70s resurgence,” Fekkai says.

If you’re ready to get groovy with this cut ask your stylist for rounded bangs with rounded corners. “It’s similar to a bob cut with the addition of subtle layers added to allow for movement to your hair,” Fekkai notes. Your hairstylist should create the look by cutting along the eyebrow and framing your face so that layers enhance the curves and contours of your face. This is also the perfect shape haircut to get if you want to maintain a long bob as the rounded corners require a bit more length than an average bob haircut.

The Octopus

Not nearly as fishy as it sounds, the octopus haircut will continue to grow in popularity next year. “The shape of this cut resembles a classic shag and exemplifies the fine line where grunge meets glamour,” says Fekkai. He recommends asking your stylist to cut wispy bangs, add layers at the top of the head, and blend what they’ve chopped with the length at the bottom. “Keep the ends long, much like the legs of an octopus!”

The expert also adds that this style works best with straight and wavy hair, especially if you want minimal styling.

Layered Curve Cut

Hairstylists predict that the layered curve cut is going to be big for the new year, as it’s the perfect style for letting your hair just do its thing and grow. As Hawkins mentioned, a lot of his clients have decided to keep up with the longer lengths they grew out when stay-at-home orders and salon shutdowns started.

Not sure what a layered curve cut looks like? Think: Jennifer Lopez, who has worn this look time and time again throughout her career. Whether she wears her curved layers long past her shoulders or cropped by her neck, the star has perfected the haircut adding her signature golden highlights and curtain bangs.

There are a few iterations of layered curve cuts (some rounder than others — perhaps you’ve seen the U-shape haircut on TikTok)) but hairstylist Nancy Lee predicts V-shaped iteration of the haircut will lead the wave. Los Angeles-based hairstylist Sunnie Brook explains that this layered v-shaped haircut “maintains length on long and medium hair while giving fullness to the ends and the illusion of shorter hair from the front depending on how arched the curve is.”

The great thing about this cut according to Lee and Brook is its versatility, which allows it to work on most face shapes and hair types. “[When cut] above the shoulders it’s flattering if you have a narrow face or chin that you want to give more fullness to,” Brook explains. “I [also] love this cut for curly or wavy hair because it gives the corners of your hair more bounce and fullness.”

The Shag

Shaggy hairstyles saw a huge uptick last year with the modern shag haircut leading the way. “As a whole, a shag is cut by pulling everything forward with more dramatic contrast of layering [rather] than the average long layers,” Nashville-based stylist Andy Judd previously told Allure. For 2023 experts predict the rocker-esque style will be trending again.

“[Shags] are great for all different hair types — and the wilder the better,” says founder of Hairrari salon Magda Ryczko. “Instead of using products to tame that frizz I see people doing it up, beach hair vibes, crazy colors and patterns,” she notes.

The Mixie

“This haircut will be trending in the new year because of its mix of retro and modern vibes,” says hairstylist Jamie Wiley. “It will be the ‘cool girl’ cut for 2023.” The mixie, a hybrid of a mullet and a pixie haircut, usually sits two to three inches long at the base of the neck. The layers are piecey, which gives movement and texture for a grunge-style look.

Wiley notes that the great thing about this cut is that it’s low maintenance. “Ask your stylist for a shorter fringe with no shelf or weight point in the back,” she says. Once you have the initial cut you can grow the length and maintain the shape for months.

Short Afro

Hairstylist Starr Mason has been seeing clients come in bored with their medium-length hair and wanting a change. Mason explains that many have been opting for this short, “boy cut” as Mason calls it, though most Black women will recognize this cut as a short afro.

“Choosing a length that is around one inch will give the versatility to finger wave the cut for a touch of glamour, while still being able to wear a no muss, no fuss natural look when feeling carefree,” says Mason. “When it comes to color, lighter and brighter shades create the illusion of expansion. Platinum is the perfect exclamation point for this statement look.”

The Box Bob

Both Brook and hairstylist Michael Dueñas predict that one-length bob haircuts will be big in the coming year.  Brook notes that this look dominated runways this year, at shows like Altuzzara SS ’22 and Ulla Johnson AW ’22 (pictured above). According to Brook this cut differs from other bob haircuts because it has blunt, sharp ends and one length all around that creates fullness and body. “The length hits at the bottom of the chin or shorter depending on your hairline, type, and texture,” she explains.

If you’re looking to get a one-length bob, as Dueñas calls it, the expert recommends asking your stylist to alleviate weight in the ends to remove bulkiness. “This will allow for straight sleek looks, or rounder, fuller, and denser looks depending on your hair texture,” he explains. He also recommends keeping the cut square as this will allow height in the corners and push the hair forward towards your face.

Butterfly Cut

Another TikTok trend that’ll continue to have legs next year, hairstylist Brendnetta Ashley, describes the butterfly cut as “a layered cut that gives a feathered look that resembles a butterfly wing.” Like Hawkins, Ashley is seeing many clients wanting to grow their hair out and she notes that as bangs grow out, “you will begin to sweep the fringe more to the sides.” This look allows you to do so intentionally in a more stylized way. If you don’t want to go all out on the butterfly cut Ashley notes you can opt for this cut but only on your bangs. “The butterfly fringe works with any cut and especially a shag cut,” Ashley notes.
